Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Section
The Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Section comprises two specific functions;
The two functions have existed in the organization for a number of years. The unifying of the two functions was undertaken September of 2003 and was seen and been proved to be the logical way forward due to the numerous work streams of common purpose.
The section is led by Helen Crampton BEd(Hons) MSc, MIOSH RSP.
Helen, who has worked for the Service since 1997, facilitates a balanced, systematic, informed approach to all Occupational Health Safety and Welfare related issues.
Helen is supported by two Health and Safety Officers, one uniformed, one civilian post. With an Occupational Health Physician, two Occupational Health nurses and a clerical assistant, providing for all the services occupational Health needs.

To develop and secure a safe and healthy working environment for all service employees and not to put others at risk by our work practices.
Mission
To influence and promote organizational change which enables the employer and employees to fulfill their mutual statutory and moral health, safety and welfare obligations.
Safety Management system- To have in place an effective policy and safety management system which addresses all risks encountered by the service.
Training and Development - Improve safety awareness to reduce the frequency of incidents and accidents.
Advice and Guidance – As an integrated occupational health and safety section, combine the provision and accessibility of health, safety and welfare advice and guidance within the service.
Welfare and Health – To improve the provision of welfare management and support.
Active Monitoring Systems – To have in place auditing systems for proactive monitoring of the safety management systems.
Reactive Monitoring Systems – To monitor standards of health and safety performance.
Environment – To assist in improving environmental conditions to safeguard the individual workplace.
Noise – To have in place an effective policy covering all aspects of noise.
Manual Handling – Maintain an effective manual handling policy.
Recent developments:
Introduction of a Noise Control Programme and a Well-Being (stress) Policy. Working groups: Working at Height and regional audit formed.
Occupational Health.
Services provided by the unit include; pre employment medical checks and testing, in service medicals, health and fitness monitoring, health education, counselling and workplace health assessments.
Recent development:
The unit has been allocated a budget to use for medical interventions, scans, physiotherapy, counselling for post-traumatic support, etc, to support and facilitate an effective, efficient programmed return to work for employees.
