DERBY’S YOUNG PEOPLE SAY ‘YES!’

YOUNG people from part of Derby are currently taking part in the first youth engagement scheme – YES! – to be run in the city by DFRS and its partners.
Two successful schemes have already been run in the Staveley area. The scheme is based at the new Nottingham Road Community Fire Station and involves young people aged 13 to 16 from the Derwent, Oakwood, Spondon and Chaddesden areas of Derby who have been referred by local schools, Derby Community Safety Partnership and Derby City Council.
The aims of the YES! scheme are to help address anti-social behaviour and youth crime, improve self esteem for the young people and develop an appreciation of the communities they live in. It conforms to the study of citizenship – a statutory part of the school curriculum – and covers knowledge and understanding about becoming informed citizens, developing skills of enquiry and communication, participation and responsible action.
Cllr Paul Smith, Chair of Derbyshire Fire Authority, said: “The YES! scheme has been ground breaking for Derbyshire and we are delighted to be backing it. The first two schemes have been a great success and we have agreed funding for the programme to be rolled out across the county. As well as this first course in Derby, we are on course to roll out schemes in Ilkeston and Glossop later on in the year.”
Keith Brooks, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service’s South Area Manager said: “The commencement of the YES! programme in Derby is seen as a great opportunity for the established partnership agencies already working in the city to become further involved in running this excellent support programme for young people. I know that the YES! scheme will prove to be a worthy engagement tool to help promote citizenship and highlight positive attitudes towards education and responsible social behaviour.”
Contributing partner organisations to the programme include Derbyshire Constabulary, Derby City Council, Sporting Futures, Peak District National Park Rangers, Derby College, Derbyshire Sport, Ministry of Defence and Derby Community Safety Partnership.
