Frequently Asked Questions
How old do I have to be? You can apply on your 14th birthday up to and including your 16th birthday. Once you have been accepted as a Fire Cadet you can attend until you are 18 years old.
Is it just for boys? No! The Fire Cadets are an inclusive project that promotes equal opportunities throughout the organisation and welcomes all young people.
How much will I have to pay? Nothing! Fire Cadets is fully supported by Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service. The cadets will raise funds for their own project through community projects and so on.
How often do I have to come? Once a week during school term time. Cadets run from 6.30pm – 8.30pm weekly. You will be expected to attend on a regular basis and there are opportunities to raise money for your project or attend camps which may include some weekends. Please check with your local participating station for details.
What will I do? You will learn the basic role of a firefighter which consists of using the hose, hydrants and some breathing apparatus and much more. You will work towards achieving a BTEC level 2 Award, Certificate or Diploma in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community. You will be trained by operational firefighters from your local fire stations.
Do I have to wear a uniform? Yes. The uniform is part of the project and is provided by Derbyshire Fire & Rescue free of charge. You will be expected to take ownership of your uniform and wear it on each cadet night and event.
Where are the cadet units? New units will be starting in April at Nottingham Road in Chaddesden, Ilkeston and Glossop Fire Stations. We are currently recruiting for these locations only so please drop off your completed application form at the relevant station. Please note: you must live in the immediate surrounding area of the fire station involved to participate.
