Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service

Here are the answers to the questions we are asked most often.

Q. Are you recruiting for firefighters?
A.Please see the latest information on the careers page. We do not operate a waiting list or register of interest.

Recruitment for firefighters wholetime duty system (full-time) at Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service takes place at a regional level. Details of our next recruitment campaign will be posted on our website in due course.

Q. What qualifications do I need to join the Fire Service?
A. No formal educational qualifications are required but you will be asked to undertake written tests, fitness test, job-related awareness tests, a medical examination and an interview. We will be updating our careers section soon to cover all the above areas in more detail. Keep checking to find out more.

Q. What does the training involve?
A. For a full-time firefighter you will be expected to successfully complete a 15 week Residential Course. However you will find that your training is constant as new challenges present themselves.

Q. Do I have to be a Firefighter to work for the Fire Authority?
A. Absolutely not. There are career opportunities in our Command and Control Centre and with our support staff, without whom we would be unable to function efficiently. Visit our Careers page for further information

Q. Are all the services free?
A. Not all of them but don't worry you will not be charged if you need a Fire Engine to help you in a real emergency. However, charges can be made for Special Services such as Chemical Incidents.

Q. Why is there such a fuss about malicious calls and false alarms?
A. We do not have an endless supply of Fire Engines, for example there are only four to cover all of Derby City and its suburbs. Whilst attending a malicious call a fire engine is not available for a real emergency and someone might die.

Q. Where do I go for advice on safety?
A. We have some community safety information on this site, alternatively you may contact our Community Safety Department at Alfreton or please call in at your nearest Fire Station.

Q. How many Fire Stations are there?
A. In Derbyshire there are eleven full-time and twenty Retained Stations. More information about our stations is available here.

Q. What does "Retained" mean?
A. Retained means the Fire Engines are staffed by people in the local community on a part-time basis. These people live or work very close to the Fire Station and are able to leave their full-time job to respond to an emergency. Further information is available here
