Major Rescue Unit Goes Live
Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service is launching one of its latest emergency rescue vehicles – the Major Rescue Unit (MRU). Fitted on a Scania chassis, the vehicle is the first of its kind to be used in Derby and replaces the old Emergency Tender (ET).
Station Manager Roy Reynolds said: "The MRU will enable us to provide a more effective response at major incidents. It carries heavy duty rescue and lifting equipment for use at road traffic collisions involving multiple vehicles or incidents involving larger vehicles such as lorries, trains, aeroplanes etc."
"It also builds upon the regional Urban Search and Rescue capabilities by providing Derbyshire with an initial response to incidents such as building collapse, where our specially trained firefighters evaluate and initiate the stabilisation and shoring up of unsafe structures. This is carried out using the new specialist equipment that is now available on the appliance."
"Following the hard work of Station Manager Jack Dempsey and the Nottingham Road fire crews over many months, all the staff have now received the additional specialist training which has enabled the vehicle to go ‘on the run’ from Monday 18 January."
This is the first of two MRU vehicles that will be available within Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, with the second appliance due to be ‘on the run’ later in the year. This will be based at Staveley Community Fire Station.
