Derbyshire's Chief Fire Officer To Retire

Derbyshire’s Chief Fire Officer Brian Tregunna is to retire from his post at the end of March 2010, it has been announced today (15 January 2010).

Mr Tregunna has worked in the fire and rescue service for nearly 32 years, previously serving in Cornwall and Hereford & Worcester before joining Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service as its Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive in 2005.

During his leadership, the organisation has made rapid progress and is now widely recognised as one of the highest performing services in the country. Several awards and accolades have been received in recent years for the Service’s work on areas such as community safety, equality and diversity, and health and safety.  Highlights have included the award winning ‘Phoenix’ community project in Normanton, Derby, and the innovative YES! scheme working with under achieving young people, as well as the development of new community fire stations at Nottingham Road in Derby, Ilkeston, Chesterfield and Staveley.

Mr Tregunna said: "I am very proud of our achievements over the past four years. It has been an honour to lead the service and to work with such great people.  Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service is well placed to meet future challenges and I am sure that the organisation will continue to deliver a range of quality services for local people."

Councillor Peter Makin, Chair of Derbyshire Fire Authority, said all members of the Fire Authority recognised the excellent and loyal service Mr Tregunna had given to Derbyshire since his appointment in 2005.

He added: "The Service has progressed from strength to strength under his leadership and it is with great regret that we agreed to his retirement."

"He leaves the Service in a very good position to respond to challenges in the future. Mr Tregunna has created a competent senior management team that is well placed to carry on in the interim while an appointment is made so that the good work he started will continue."
