Fire Service 'Safe as Houses' Campaign
DERBYSHIRE Fire & Rescue Service has just launched a ‘Safe as Houses’
campaign to reduce the number of accidental house fires experienced in homes
across North-West Derbyshire.
Group Manager, Steve Helps warned: ‘”Almost all house fires can be
avoided and we know that if we deliver the right information and people follow
our advice house fire figures will could be dramatically reduced.”
As well as raising awareness of how to prevent house fires through the local
press a number of initiatives are being run across the area.
In Chesterfield, Clowne, Shirebrook, Danesmoor and Killamarsh prevention team
staff and fire service volunteers are taking part in a joint initiative with the
North Derbyshire Home Improvements Agency encouraging people who are over 65 to
take up their Handyvan Services which includes a Home Fire Safety Check and free
advice on security and living independently.
The Kitchen Demonstration Roadshow hits North Derbyshire during National Chip
Week (half-term) bringing the potential dangers of cooking to Shirebrook,
Chesterfield and Staveley.
Community Safety Officers will be continuing their visits to local schools
and community groups. Community Safety Officer Victoria Sparkes added:
“Anyone can have a house fire and the right amount of working smoke alarms will
probably save your life if you do. Please check that you have at least one
on every level of your house and check that it works every week. In
addition take time to make a fire plan – all the children we teach in years 2
and 6 know what this is – do you?”
