Group 101 Become Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service Firefighters

“THE course was challenging, but very enjoyable.” “I am proud I have made it through and can’t wait to get on station.” “A roller coaster ride both mentally and physically.” “One of the most rewarding experiences of my life.” “The job and camaraderie are unbeatable.”

These are just some of the comments from the 11 diverse people – ten men and one woman - who make up Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service’s course 101 and who are due to “pass out” this Thursday (4 February 2010) at Kingsway Fire Station in Derby.

It will certainly be a proud moment for the latest trainees when they parade in front of their family and friends.  The 11, who are aged between 19 and 48, come from all walks of life.  Their former careers include engineers, a lorry driver, security, a student, HM Forces, a pharmacy technician, police community support officer and two retained firefighters.

At 11am, the Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive Brian Tregunna, will open the proceedings.  It will be a memorable moment for him as well as the trainees as it will be the last time he will officiate at a “Pass Out Parade” before his retirement at the end of March this year.

The CFO’s welcome will be followed by a presentation from the instructors about the course content and then certificates will be presented to the newly qualified full-time firefighters.  Once the formal part of the day has been completed, there will be a variety of displays including a fire behaviour demonstration and a demonstration by the chip pan team.

A buffet lunch will follow and guests will have the time to view the static displays and facilities before moving onto the second part of the day when the new firefighters give a practical demonstration of their newly acquired skills.  This will be followed by awards.
